Dundrum Shopping Centre is a landmark development in Ireland comprising of more than 100 stores including Harvey Nichols and House of Fraser, 29 restaurants, a 12 screen cinema,
the Mill theatre, town square and 3 levels of basement car parking for 3000 spaces. Conventional building codes do not easily make allowance for innovative and unique projects such as Dundrum Shopping Centre.
A performance based fire engineering approach was adopted which added significant value by allowing design flexibility and optimising the fire safety requirements. The performance based approach included advanced fire/smoke spread analyses, intelligent smoke detection and information systems and computer modelling of egress flows to optimise the design of the egress system. The steel structure was also analysed to determine its real response under fire conditions to determine the extent of fire protection required.
